HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, is a relatively new form of cosmetic skin tightening treatment that some consider to be a noninvasive, painless alternative to face lifts as a means of enhancing skin elasticity. HIFU works by using focused ultrasound energy to target the layers just below the surface of the skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in firmer, younger looking skin. As a result of the ultrasound energy, the tissues are rapidly heated. Upon reaching a certain temperature, the cells in the targeted area suffer cellular damage. It may seem counterintuitive at first glance, but the damage actually stimulates cells to produce more collagen, which is a protein that gives your skin its structure and provides it with flexibility. As a result of the increase in collagen, the skin becomes a lot more firmer, tighter and wrinkle-free. During the ultrasound treatment, high-frequency sound waves are directed predominantly to a specific tissue site just below the surface of the skin. As a result, the upper layers of the skin and adjacent tissue are not damaged by the high-frequency ultrasound beams.
