HIFU, or high-intensity focused ultrasound, is a relatively new form of cosmetic skin tightening treatment that some consider to be a noninvasive, painless alternative to face lifts as a means of enhancing skin elasticity. HIFU works by using focused ultrasound energy to target the layers just below the surface of the skin in order to stimulate the production of collagen, resulting in firmer, younger looking skin. As a result of the ultrasound energy, the tissues are rapidly heated. Upon reaching a certain temperature, the cells in the targeted area suffer cellular damage. As we age, we lose volume in many areas of the face. It is most common for cheeks, brows, and lips to lose volume. Consequently, the cheeks descend from their usual high position in the face near the eyes to a lower position as they sag and lose volume. There is a tendency for lines to appear around the nose and mouth as facial tissues thin out, as well as cheeks that appear hollow as they age.
